Prompt care & the zoo

Sick boys:
Henry first, he went to the Dr yesterday after he was up all might Tuesday night with ear pain. Confirmed outer ear infections, aka swimmers ear. Antibiotic ear drops, no water for 2 days. Boo.

Round two today. William was up last night coughing and is wheezing. He is with Patrick at the Dr now. They already have us there on file from our vacation two years ago and a bout of pink eye. Double boo.

We did manage to squeeze in a visit to the zoo yesterday, just us moms and boys (I took William). We had beautiful weather and the animals were very active, there was even a roaring lionness.

Thankful for two more days.

Rip tide

Day five:

As far as vacations go, Tuesdays are my favorite day. You finally feel settled in, but you still have the whole week ahead.

Today I nearly face-planted on a treadmill - very old workout facilities, and the treadmill stopped, abruptly, without warning when I was running at a 7.2, ha! Erica and I went for a run on the bike path along the beach instead. It was hot and steamy, but felt less dangerous :)

Our pool was closed this morning for maintenance. We spent our morning at the beach instead. A beach patrol (I have no clue about the proper title - he's the guy who combs the beach in a Gator, making William drool), stopped us to explain an area of the beach marked off due to dangerous rip tides. Henry was very intrigued and spent the remainder of our beach time asking me questions - to which I primarily made up answers - about rip tides.
Do they pull you in from your chair? How about from the sand?
Do people get out of them?

At nap time, I went to the beach and sat quietly by myself. It was peaceful and grounding and all of those things one feels watching sparkling waves crash against the white sandy shore.

Our family skipped formal dinner plans tonight in exchange for a walk to get ice cream (heaping huge scoops of ice cream) and then went for a night swim at the pool.

Tomorrow there is a chance for rain, I might take William to the zoo in the morning and pray for the clouds to clear in the afternoon!

Swim shirts & key lime pie

Day four:

We started today with a nice walk down to a water front beach store. The sun has been very strong and our poor boys, especially Henry, got pink shoulders yesterday. We got some swim shirts and aloe and headed to the pool for a morning swim. (Thankfully those, along with a thick slathering of spf every half hour-we took no chances today-did the trick.)

It was the quintessential vacation day. Pool, long naps, followed by a visit to the beach to dip our toes and play wiffle-ball. We ordered pizza and Reggae Rolls (from Pompano Joes) and ate by the pool while the boys felt adventurous having a night swim.

Once Henry and William were tucked into bed, I capped off this perfect day with an thick slice of key lime pie we carried out from Pompano Joes.

Delicious!

Easter Sunday

Day three:

Sunrise on the beach, resurrection story in John, splashing in the waves, lunch by the pool, dinner at Pompano Joes (table for 15), Easter egg hunt on the beach, late night swim at the pool, bedtime at 10 pm.

Happy Easter! He is Risen!

We've arrived

Day two:

After a short drive this morning and a delightful continental breakfast at the Best Western in Opp, AL., we arrived in Destin. It's beautiful, sunny, and warm. Patrick shoulders are already pink, there's a fine layer of sugary sand on the tile floor and the boys fell fast asleep within minutes of their sunkissed heads hitting their pillows.

Yes, we are here at last. Tomorrow we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Beautiful news in this beautiful place!

sweet home Alabama

Day one:
We are ten hours into our drive; 10 hrs, 13 minutes, 8 seconds to be exact (at least according to our van's trip timer). We're in Alabama somewhere between Montgomery and Opp ( our stopping point for today). I have no idea where Opp is and had never heard of it until planning this trip. We are meeting Bret, Erica and Ben there and have been texting each other about what a great Opp-ortunity it is to stay there. They are already there and texted us that the hotel is a nice Opp-tion. The Opp jokes are carrying us through these last long hours in the car.

Today has gone so well. I'm so proud of Henry and William, junior travelers extraordinaire. Henry did not sleep one wink but has been happy to read stories, listen to Arthur on cd, watch borrowed library dvd's and snack on heavily processed foods. The makings of a perfect road trip! And William has been content doing the same and napped for a bit this afternoon, and he was nearly sat on by a blind man in Kentucky. It was a narrow escape, but no one was hurt!

Really a lovely first day of vacation - or nearly vacation. Tomorrow we will only have to drive about 2 hours and we'll be in Destin. Looking forward to seeing the beautiful beach!

Packing

I'm packing for Florida tonight. I started with the important stuff - jewelry. Despite what you may be thinking, there's no such thing as too much! Just like there's no such thing as over prepared or over packed. That's my vacation packing motto at least. And I have to say I am so grateful for a husband who, despite what he may be thinking, never tells me I'm taking too much and never dissaproves. Love you Patrick!

the circus

On Friday night we took the boys to the Gamma Phi circus at Illinois State. When I think circus, it conjures pictures of cotton candy and elephants and popcorn and red and white big top tents. This circus isn't that. It's acrobats and unicycles and walking the tight wire though. I like that we're still close to ISU and it's fun when we can bring our boys back there and fondly remember our college days.
gamma phi circus
{Sorry, these pictures are mostly from the anxiety provoking nose-bleeds and all from my phone. By the way, a member of student government gave us free tickets on our way in. They happened to be nose-bleeds though, in the student section. I felt o-l-d.}
It was an impressive show. I like that these are all college students who have practiced all year (sometimes for their entire college career) to put on these shows for this weekend.
gamma phi circus
Every act held Henry's rapt attention. He worried for the tightrope walkers and cheered for the people on unicycles. William was waiting and wanted only to see the "fire wheel". Every time an act was over and the stage went dark, he would loudly ask "is it the fire wheel now". Or sometimes demand loudly, "I want the fire wheel!" I showed the boys some videos of Gamma Phi circus in the past on youtube Friday afternoon before the big show; he caught a glimpse of something that did look like a wheel of fire and that was all he wanted to see Friday night. Unfortunately a fire wheel never came.
gamma phi lightswords
But the show must go on. They were thrilled with these light-up swords. Although I wondered who thought these two-foot long swords in the waving and excited hands of small children crammed in a tightly filled auditorium was a good idea.
Fire wheel or not, it was a good night!

the tiny snatches

Most of the time our days are compiled of small stuff. It's little moments from morning to night sandwiched tightly in between mugs of hot coffee at breakfast and sudsy baths at bedtime. Small little moments that if you stack them up together create something bigger and something beautiful and something altogether more grand.
shot_1302123350766
But the thing is I usually miss them. I hurry past to get to the next little moment without realizing that those fleeting moments will be forever gone. My mom has this saying, "you won't pass this way again". She reminds me when I'm struggling with the boy's naps {that they have conspired to give up nearly completely} or complaining about lugging both boys through the grocery store. I get it though. It's good to pause. I think it's why I love photography; I get to capture a moment, something that means something to me, and freeze it forever.
shot_1302123356290
 Reading the chapter for our small group this week, I came across this quote {which I highlighted, underlined and dog eared the page}:
"The tiny snatches of time are often lost to us. These can and should be redeemed. They are times for inner quiet, for reorienting our lives like a compass needle. They are little moments that help us to be genuinely present where we are." {Celebration of Discipline; Richard J. Foster}
shot_1302123341784
 I know everyone says it, {and there are times I will time to pass quickly} but life is passing fast, sometimes at a breaknecking speed. I want to be "genuinely present" where I am and catch those tiny snatches before they are forever lost. So I've started to look for them. I tried to pause and take in the little moments. The little pieces and fragments that make up the bigger, beautiful picture. I like what I saw.

{William playing in farmer Grandpa's barn.}
I find myself posting about this every once in a while; this idea of slowing down to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of life happening in the small moments swirling around me. I think it's the whole idea of needing to reorient my "inner compass needle". To take my focus off of the unknown and the stuff of little value.

I feel oriented and present. Thankful for these little moments and my chance to experience them.

w's

william's w
{It was a lazy Monday morning when William wrote his first "w". He doesn't love crafts or coloring and hasn't showed much interest in learning to write his name or letters, so he was keeping this one a big surprise. He wrote the 'w' with a big black crayon and shrieked "look, a 'w'!" We clapped and cheered and hung it up. So proud of my boy. He is moving along just fine at his own speed.}

{My most favorite thing is when he sits up on the chair with his little feet tucked under his bottom. The fact that they are bare feet just make it all the sweeter.}

It turned out beautifully and will be such a lovely keepsake for them as they start their lives together. They got lots of great things; we cheered the loudest when Rachel opened her new Keurig! A must-have for any household!}

Rachel and Joe are getting married on July 2. I am so happy for Rachel and so excited for her wedding day. She will be a glowing, beautiful bride! And by the way, Reggie the Redbird will be making a special guest appearance at her wedding reception - it will be one not to miss!

I can't wait, Rachel! Congratulations!!

happy birthday Sara!

sara's birthday
Today is sunny and warm, things look bright and fresh, colorful and green. I've been thinking today about how perfectly fitting it is that Sara has a spring birthday. It fits her sunny and warm personality perfectly.

Sara is my sister-in-law but really she is so much more than that to me. That sounds so stuffy and formal and law binding anyway. I consider Sara a sister and true friend; she has known me since I was an emotional, Subway-sandwich-making high school student {ha!}. She is the first person I called when I found out I was pregnant with Henry {since we wanted to surprise our parents in some special way}. She was just a few months pregnant with Gabe, and I knew I could count on her for some nuggets of wisdom. We marveled that our due dates were exactly four months apart. She is incredibly sweet and kind; I admire her hospitality and strive to have a home with doors that always stand open and welcome like theirs. She is an amazing mother to her two sweet boys; always calm and gentle and patient with them. She has a keen eye for detail and design. I love her sense of style personally and in their home - very pretty and sweet and warm at the same time. She is creative and makes Gabe's and Caleb's birthdays memorable occasions by creating beautiful and fun parties. I'm inspired to craft more and make more garlands after being with Sara for the weekend.

Today, this sunny and beautifully warm spring day, is Sara's birthday. I am so thankful for the way our lives are entwined through family and through raising our same-aged boys together. I love you, Sara and look forward to what the next year has in store!

Happy Birthday, Sara!!

{Remember that crazy robin? The one that sits on the line outside the office window and flies into the glass?}
{It's back. You can see it flying into the window with a flourish here. Crazy bird.}
{William stood here and watched, captivated, on Monday morning while I took a shower and got ready.}

{On Tuesday Dolly came to visit. Farmer Grandpa came over to ask for a ride to his tractor and we were busted harboring a dog. He drove in the other direction and she ran after the truck for at least a mile. I thought it was super sad.}

{Dolly is a terrific digger. She can dig a deep hole in like a minute flat. We are all so amazed by this and are plotting ways to bring her to the beach with us to dig some fabulous holes in the sand.}

{On Wednesday, Dolly ran with me on my afternoon run. Every last one of the four miles. This sounds a little silly, but I felt safe and less lonely with her running next to me.}

{I love the little stage they have there. Henry played the role of the band-conducting brave knight while William ran the ticket booth.}
  opposum
{On Wednesday we saw a dead opossum. It was just laying there, clearly dead, but still very much in tact. It's teeth were bared and it's long, rough tail curled around it's body. I saw it there during my run Wednesday. We wanted to show the boys the animal that was living under our house for all of those weeks last Fall. So creepy. William was very intrigued and a little bit sad about it. After we tucked him in to bed that night, he came back out to tell Patrick he hoped the opossum was with his mommy and daddy.}

Gabe is six!

Gabe's 6th Birthday 036
My sweet and very darling nephew Gabe turned six on March 26. Sara created a clever and an absolutely darling {but very boy friendly} lego party to celebrate. I will let her share the details - but I'll give you just a tiny sneak peek.

{It was adorable!}
gabe's birthday
We had so much fun celebrating Gabe's birthday; Henry and William loved spending time with their cousins, building with legos, playing outside and sipping fun fizzy drinks through red/white striped straws {darling!}.

On Sunday, before we headed home {and after Dan and I went on our long morning run together}, we met up for lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings.
