The Vances have not been vaccinated for the flu. Be warned.

I will say that I have never had a flu shot and just am very unsure of the benefits of it. I haven't decided yet if I'll take Henry to get one - he has his 2 1/2 year check up in January so I suppose he could get it then. And William is too young to get it this year. Babies have to be at least 6 months old. I know they suggest that anyone who is taking care of a newborn/young child should get the vaccine. It's just that firstly, I don't really know whether I buy that this shot is really helpful or not and secondly, I rarely see a doctor so I haven't been in a place where the shot is readily available and easily accessible. What are your thoughts on the flu shot?

I think the flu shot is terrible. I have never had one, and have rarely ever gotten the flu. (I can't even think when I ever had it... so it has been awhile). I don't believe it is healthy to purposely inject a virus into your body. I understand the thinking behind it, but I say you're better off eating healthy, exercising, and getting plenty of rest, oh and taking good vitamins to keep yourself healhty. This way, if you do come in contact with the virus, your body will be more likely to fend it off.

I've had it a few times, but never for the boys. My doctors made me get it when I was pregnant and they do free ones at work every year (I think I only did that once). I'm indifferent; I never had any negative effects, but it's hard to say whether it helped or not. I have never had one for Gabe, either (and Caleb is still too young). I guess when given the choice I usually pass, but I don't have really good reasons one way or the other.

Take some vitamin C and wash your hands a lot and you probably will be better off than having some unknown virus shot into your body. Can we really be sure what "they" are shooting into us when they give a "flu shot". I have known some people to get a touch of the flu from the shot...so what is the purpose of that...hello!!! Just get enough rest, drink enough water, and try to eat healthy and you should have the natural immunity to fend off the flu. That is my opinion. Delcine

I haven't gotten one this year, although your dad has been reminding me I need one. I have gotten them for the last 5 or 6 years. The two years before that I got very ill and was sick for about a week each time. I think the shots are better now than they were when I was in college because the vaccine is dead rather than just weakened. I have not gotten sick from the ones I've had recently. Because you are not teaching anymore where you are exposed to a lot of children and because you are so young, it is probably not a big deal for you. But for those of us who are age challenged it is probably good if we get them, but I HATE needles!

I got a flu shot for the first time ever and only because I felt the pressure from James' pediatrician! I didn't get sick or have any side effects so my feeling is "eh" either way seems okay. I think I just felt that if I did get sick this year and James did get it from me, I would kick myself because it is a free shot under insurance and took 10 minutes (not counting travel time of course). But Jean has yet to get one and probably won't so...there you go. My thoughts.

One thing I know for sure about the flu shot is that it doesn't protect from every kind of flu, there are many different strands, so the flu shot that you get, protects you from one strand of the flu, so there is still a chance you will get it....and the flu shot actually injects you with the flu and then this helps your body to build up immunity against it...i hardly ever get one, and never really get sick....hmmm....Amber

What a Hot Topic! I have never gotten one, although I am suppose to do to my asthma and when I was prego with my girls, but never did, because I really don't get sick and can't remember the last time I got the flu (knock on wood). The girls have gotten them, and while Ainsley is only 7 mos. neither of my girls have ever been sick with anything more than a cold, again knock on wood, we've never had to have them on antibiotics or anything. I don't neccessairly think that's all because of the flu shot but it may help in the flu season...but really who knows. I am sure it's more of a combo of things to keep one healthy rather than just one shot.
